How to Prepare for Technical Interviews: A Realistic Guide

A practical weekly preparation plan covering coding, projects, behavioural rounds, and mock practice.

Build a structured weekly loop

Dedicate weekdays to fundamentals, coding practice, and weak-area revision. Use weekends for full mock interviews and project deep-dives. Inconsistent preparation is the most common reason candidates fail — structured repetition matters more than cramming. Track topics covered and scores in each mock session.

Know your own projects deeply

Prepare the architecture, database schema, API design, key decisions, challenges, and tradeoffs for every project on your resume. Most candidates lose points not on algorithmic questions but on their own work. Practice explaining each project in two minutes aloud before the interview.

Practice answers aloud in a structure

Use the STAR format for behavioural questions (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and a definition-example-tradeoff structure for technical concepts. Speaking aloud reveals gaps in clarity that reading notes does not. Record yourself and watch the playback at least once.

Track your weak areas aggressively

After every mock interview write down the exact questions you could not answer well. Research them fully before the next practice session. Many candidates improve knowledge broadly but ignore specific gaps. Fixing five specific weak areas is more effective than a broad review before the interview.
